OUGD104 - What is a Line? (Final)

20.04.10 - Nothing goes to plan
I choose to do my final piece in black and white so that the colour did not distract from the content of the images.

I was intending on coming back to College earlier in the Easter break to print and finish all of OUGD104 before deadline day. However, due to family issues, I decided to stay another few days. This put more pressure on me to complete my work in a shorter amount of time. To add to my difficulties instead of rotating my photographs in Photoshop, I placed them as I wanted them to print in InDesign. When I tried to print the InDesign files at college they would not open. I went home and exported them as PDFs. Deadline day arrived and I again tried to print this PDF, however it had vanished from my external hard-drive (it was there!). I did not have time to layout all of the images again or edit them again. I have had to resort to making a video animation of the photographs in a similar style to what I was going to do with the flip books... To add to everything the videos are missbehaving being uploaded onto this blog! I am very unhappy with the final piece produced. I have a ticket booked back home again today at lunchtime so there is no way I could re-do any of my desired work in time. I am really annoyed at myself for not printing everything sooner and think all the issues with files must be karma! I will make the flip books before the weekend as I think they would work really well. I do wish I stuck to one idea and developed that instead of branching out all over the place. I would have really liked to experiment with a flashgun as like Harlod E. Edgerton.

OUGD104 - What is a Line? (Easter)

Beginning of Easter - Still experimenting
Well... I carried on experimenting over the Easter break with what timline I could document and here they are...

- What is a Line?

- Hello. My name is Patrick.

- Hello. My name is Becki.

- The paths we choose

End of Easter - Seriously, what is a line?
After all my experiementing, I thought it would be even more appropriate to make one final sequence based on lines and travel. Lines to reinforce the theme of a continuous event and travel as many of my sequences seemed to use this. I also wanted to add time into the equation and have a final piece showing all of these. I was also interested in creating it in flipbook form, instead of a digital animation.

For all these reasons I decided to photograph all the fixed vertical lines in my room (items which are always there). I went round my room in a clockwise motion to encapsulate the time , as seem on a clock face. I wanted to make 3 flip books (however only 2 would upload at this time), all with the same images inside, drawing upon what I had leant in Visual Language and demonstrate that things can look different by frame and format. Unfortunately everything seemed to go wrong the day before submission...

OUGD104 - What is a Line? (23.03.10)

Buggy
This is Buggy. Buggy jump, Buggy fly, Buggy splat, Buggy die. This is an old hand action kids do in schools and I thought it might be fun to demonstrate this in photographic form... as the actions work kind of like a pictogram. I would really like to develop this further and the possibly experiment with sign language. This is related to time as a sequence, only when the images are in the right order do they make sense.

Inhale
A cigarette burns away as time goes by and I have documented every drag of one. I selected the  with the most visual variations. I think it shows the process well, however It is not very interesting or new.

OUGD104 - What is a Line? (16.03.10)

I got some feedback on my idea for 'What is a Line'. From this I looked into a few more artists/designers that could inspire me. I found Sam Taylor-Wood really interesting and I want to do something similar with bread... if I can stand the mould! I was also advised to check out the Nine Inch Nails video which includes a decomposing fox. I like the black and white feel to this video and I think I will use it in my final piece because when you have a black and white image, your eyes are not distracted by colours and conotation of these, but what is actually in the photograph. From a photographic point of view, I much prefer black and white film images. to colour and digital, however on this course, and for my experimentation I am using a compact digital camera in colour just for ease.

Stoppit & Tidyup
I want to document everyday things where we normally miss the change going on... If you see someone everyday, nothing much appears to alter, but if you see something with a large gap of time, the change is obvious. I photographed every 3 minutes of me tidying my room (yes this pigsty is my room!). In an attempt a drastic change over a short space of time. I think it works pretty well as a document, but it's not really that interesting!

Suprise!
A trip that I do often when I am back in my home town of Newark (don't go there, save yourself) is to my friend Michelles house. As you can tell by the last photo, when I arrived, I had not told Michelle that she would be papparazzied on her own front doorstep! Oooops... On a professional note, this sequence wrks really well when flicked through really quickly as you can kind of tell where the car is going and where I was heading. With this sequence I took a picture at intervals but where I could capture the most information, such as corners and streets. This would work really well as a flip book when done properly. I quite like this idea...

OUGD104 - What is a Line? (09.03.10)

How long is a piece of string...?
This week I have looked into string. I documented the proces of untangling a sample of thread I had left over from my 'Summer Stitched' book. To be fair, the string wasn't really tangled and didn't take long at all to unravel but I still think it is quite an interesting idea.

Time Travel
To document my walk to College everyday and to show how much distance can be covered in 1 minute I took a photograph every minute of my walk.

It is interesting to see the journey in snapshots as I can see things which I normally miss. If I was to re-do this sequence I would try and keep the camera in the same spot, directly infront and possibly get more of the pavement in the frame, as this is the path I am walking.

OUGD104 - What is a Line? (09.02.10)

A formation of people, objects or things besides/behind the other.
I looked into placing similar object next to each other and how they varied depending on the object. I think it is interesting how you can create a line out of a number of objects. A good example would have also been a russian doll, showing the similarities and differences when next to each other. The last image shows yellow pins placed strategically so that they make a line of their own, which also appears as the letter Y.

A connected series of evens, actions or developments.
This really interested me once I realised how many possibilities there were. I like the idea of documenting developments and how things progress with the effect of time. Also how patterns are made through a repetition of actions. Tree trunks show this example really well, as their rings look beautiful and also give us information and show the development. Some other examples I could of included are the cycle of the moon and a chain links.

A mark indicating position, connection or boundaries.
Initially I only thought about arrows on signs and how they direct us. Later I thought about how many things can be seen as boundaries and can enclose text or image. A wordsearch is a great example of boundaries around letters creating a word. Letters themselves could also be classed under this topic as they have specific marks to each one. Dot to dot would also be a great example.
