OUGD301

My briefs have overlapped alot on this module, which has resulted in a very jumbled blog. Please use the 'relevant lables' widget on the right hand side of this page to view each specific brief. I am only submitting Brief 01, Brief 03. Brief 04 and Brief 05 as major briefs.

Brief 01 - Exhilaro
Brief 02 - Achitecture publication. Postponed (possible FMP)
Brief 03 - A Type of Show
Brief 04 - D&AD Ministry of Sound collaboration
Brief 05 - The Specials
Brief 06 - Digital print resources. Postponed (possible FMP)
Brief 07 - Louise Tiler (small brief no boards submitted)

There are also lables for Crit/Tutorial, Evaluation and Time Management on this blog.

Here are my final submission boards in PDF form...

End of module evaluation

The briefs I initially choose for this submission were all type based, an area I wanted to build my skills and interest. This could have gone badly wrong if I decided I hate type throughout the module, however it has done the opposite. This is the first module  can say I have enjoyed thoroughly and feel I have truly learnt alot about design practices and my own professional place in the industry.

Brief 01 threw me into the deep end, designing a font. This was good for me as I couldn't slack. I pressured myself with an intense brief and it really made me work hard from the beginning. A negative is that I didn't give myself enough time to digitise the letterforms and make them into a usable font. The file is digital, but the kerning is all wrong. Also the finishing of some of the letterforms is a bit messy, which could have easily been avoided.

Brief 02 and Brief 06 were both took big a task to complete for this module and are possible briefs for FMP. I have some research for them already.

Brief 03 focused on identity, which was never a massive part of my practice before, however I like applying one concept throughout a range, and this exhibition design was a high for me. Seeing it come together after hating my chosen stock was such a positive step. It taught me to keep with something and find a way around a problem, don't just give up.

Brief 04 is potentially the one which will change my future... Steph Bourne and I worked so well together, we listened and shared ideas and in the end came up with a product neither of us would have done on our own. There is a possibility of us starting our own practice after university, it is an avenue which I personally am going to think about over Christmas and decide upon in the New Year. Before This brief, I would never of thought about setting up on my own, but the work that both of us have produced this module has surpassed my expectations in both quality and quantity. I am not blowing my own horn, but finally I believe some confidence in my ability is appearing.

Brief 05 has not reached its full potential. This could have been taken so much further, but I ran out of time and, in honesty, patience. I do feel like this could have worked so much better as a bigger range and for that I am disappointed. The typefaces for each song are acceptable, however they could have been pushed further also. As one off pieces, I like them and would have the prints on my wall, but as a range, I believe they are quite weak.

In conclusion and in reference to my rational... My vision of what I wanted to achieve this year has been surpassed. I have produced more quality work than I initially thought I could in the time available. This is down to realistic time management and working with hand-drawn typography. I could draw letterforms all day long, and probably for 20% of this module, I have. Truly believe I have found my place in Graphic Design and intend to stay on course for FMP and my Dissertation.

Final crit

FINAL CRIT! This was really good to get feedback from my boards. Other people can see things which I have missed. I can make the changes to my final boards as and when I finish the projects.

Changes to leaflet and guide

After printing off my leaflet and guide, I found a few issues! These have now been addressed and the final ones are ready to print!

Videos - Sept

We took photographs whilst making the poster so that we could make a quick stop-motion video for promotional purposes. This could be featured on the Ministry of Sound website and also on the underground in London. It could also be an installation on a screen in the city and would work nicely alongside our environmental installations we are working on.

I have created the short sequences and Steph will put these together and add sound so they are more interesting!

UPDATE! 14.12.11
The file sizes for the short videos I made are huge! I will be submitting these on a DVD, however they are just the initial elements of what could be the video to be played around the city and at the club.

Environmental installation design

The logo will be the key feature for the identity of this exhibition. It will act as a promotional piece as an environmental installation and also will hold leaflets and be a starting point for the wayfinding.

Before & after...

Wayfinding design

Again with the plaques, I had an idea of how the wayfinding should work. This is along the actual street where the exhibition is held.

Before & after...

Outside of the gallery there are elements so visitors know they have arrived. It is such a small gallery and down a little alley that it needs this signage to be seen and attractive.

Before & after...

Plaque design

Designing the plaques was pretty easy. From my research I gathered from exhibitions and from having my identity already created for the guide and leaflet, I could apply the same techniques to these. To edge these with the fluorescent colour, I simple put some double sided tape on a strip of the paper and trimmed it down once applied to the edge of the foam board which the information was stuck to. Pretty simple, but so effective! I got this idea from the plaques that were at the Dazed & Confused exhibition at Somerset House.

Evaluation of week 9

Woah week 9. After a chat with Momma and Pappa Gage, I have realised that I have got into the habit of designing stuff that looks cool, but may not be legible and work as a piece of communication as well as it could. I need to be able to balance the aesthetic of something as well as the clear communication. A few bits of my exhibition identity (Brief 03) need tweeking so that they make sense to the general public and outsiders.

Another review is that of my involvement in pop-up shops and fares. I am feeling pretty deflated after only selling 1 print at the Vernon Street pop-up shop. I don't think it is the quality of the work, but more the audience who attend such events. I am glad that I have a large number of these prints to give away to studios, however I need to think about the audience in future about any selling opportunities I go forward with. I am hoping to sell some of these in a different avenue, but not at such 'craft heavy' events.

More work needs to be done on our collaborative competition brief (Brief 04) and hopefully me and Steph will be wrapping this up tomorrow. I am hoping to extend this brief slightly, but am unsure yet how to do this until we have the main part completed.

A Type of Show identity (Brief 03) made a bit step forward this week, and I made quite a big change to the identity by simplifying it and only using one logo rather than a range. This will make it more visually similar and I am proud (yes, proud) of the one logo I have created and am using.

This coming week I also need to spend some time on extending Exhilaro (Brief 01) I can do this easily, I just need to DO IT!

Window

This will be placed on the window of the text/gallery in London. I will need to Photoshop this as it will not be possible to actually place this on the window! An aspect of this needs to have the orange colour, but I will discover this when I Photoshop it and see it with the wayfinding.

14.12.12 UPDATE!
This is now part of the environmental installation as there was not enough space on the window to make it an impactful enough for how I envisioned. On reflection, it works better as a installation as it provides information about the exhibit, which people would not neccessarily need if they are there anyways!

Guide

Happy with this! The leaflet is free and gives a taster of what is in the exhibition, whereas the guide has a small cost applied and holds more detailed into about a wider selection of the contributors. To make the identity stronger, I have edited the images for both publications so they are black and white and adjusted the levels so there is more contrast in them.

A selection of some of the pages of the guide. I have printed this out also and have some things to tweek to make it more consistent with the leaflet so that they seem as an identity and work next to each other as well as on their own.

Leaflet

From my layout sketches I could easily create the free leaflet in InDesign. I had to trace round a google map for the directions but this is one element which could do with a bit of enhancing and perfecting. Otherwise I am pretty happy with the layout.

When I printed these out as a rough draft I could see other parts which could be tweeked slightly.

Logo decision

I have decided just to use the one logo instead of a few different ones. Purely because one looks better than the rest and I don't think they look as consistent as I hoped. On reflection it is a better decision to move forward with just one.

Wall layout

I want to add some information on the walla as I found at the exhibitions at Somerset House. After I thought about the layout for the wall, I rethought this placement. In the location that I have chose, there does not seem to be much room inside and there is a nice window. As they did in the actual exhibition, I have designed this information to be displayed on the window.

Leaflet layout

Tried out a few different folds for the leaflet. From looking at publications from other exhibits I would really like to make it out of one sheet of paper. The exhibition guide will be more in-depth and will have a price. This will have more pages and information on all of the exhibitors.

The one which works best is the third one. A simple 3-fold. I think the information has the most amount of space in this form. Now I can look at layouts...

Content of all deliverables

I have already researched the exhibitors and which images and info to inform my audience of the pieces on show. However I had not thought about what other info needs to be on all the deliverables.

Final logos

I have had to do more work to my logos to make them usable in this brief from my initial hand-drawn sketches. Each logo had to be drawn over in Photoshop and cleaned up, then live traced in Illustrator and then the application of the 3D and bevel. So happy with how these look and work as a set. My previous worries have been resolved! Glad that I continued with these logos as they still look hand-drawn and a personal touch, with some digital elements and professional finish.

Logo arrangement

The one which works best with this type is the third option, however it will not work with the other logos aswell. The first logo will be the most easily consistent.
