Logo arrangement

The one which works best with this type is the third option, however it will not work with the other logos aswell. The first logo will be the most easily consistent.

3D

Really keen to add a shadow to my logos to make it seem more interesting rather than flat on a page to communicate the exhibition. After playing around with the 3D extrude & bevel options in Illustrator (once I had live traced my photoshop text) I chose which one was working best on my stock. It needs to be bold enough with high contrast.

Digitising logos

Again at the beginning, this went badly! But then I remembered it is easier if I edit my hand-drawn sketches first in Photoshop (alot) it is so much better! By tracing round the letters on Photoshop I can then import them into Illustrator and add details such as shine and shadows...

Had a mini crit with Steph Bourne as once I had digitised these 3 logos I was unsure how they would work together. We both agree that the whit detail on the first one enhances the look and makes it look more interactive and so suits an event/exhibition. However, she was more optimistic about the collection. She suggested how I could adjust these logos to make them a bit more consistent. Helpful chat!

These logos look sooooooo much better and consistent!

Pencil logos 2

Here are the other hand-rendered logos. I think before doing the other few I had in mind I will digitise these and see what they look like. Having second thoughts whether my range of logos will actually work. My brand needs to be strong enough and hopefully the dependant variables such as the circles, stroke width and fluorescent orange will be enough to marry the concept.

Evaluation of week 8

Well, finally, all of my posters have been printed and the packaging is sorted! Also, I know how to best use my stock for Brief 03 (exhibition) annnnd the layout for my collaborative competition brief is done. It has been another one of those higgeldy piggeldy weeks where again I have not completed a brief, but I have done alot of major bits for a few of them. This week I need to complete 2 of my brief to get back on track.

By Friday I will have Brief 03 and Brief 04 completed! This will leave me a bit of time to expand Brief 01 and Brief 05 and also create my boards to a high standard.

Layout

By getting Stephs feedback on my layout ideas I can get an understanding whether it will work with a geometric background and if she thinks she can work with it. It would be a shame if the layout looks great with no background of 3D, and then gets extremely confused and over complicated when the illustrations are applied. Steph liked the two layouts which I starred previosouly so I have digitised these and now I can now pass these over to her to look at the geometric shapes and more illustrative stuff. Meanwhile I can continue to look at folds and we can create the final pieces quickly.

Layout ideas

By creating loads of different layout taking into consideration the heirarchy I have worked out previously. I starred the ones which I think could work well with a geometric background.

POSTERS PRINTED!

So happy that these are done now! I have also quickly made some labels to go on the outside of the poster tubes and an infomation piece to go inside each poster. I would have spent more time on these, but feel I have spent enough time on this!

Complimentary type

To go alongside the type I have created for 'Saturday Sessions' I think a similar font would be best.  I do want it to look different though. It needs to be easily legible and communicate the information rather than expressing character.

When shown alongside the type I just created, these few work best... They are Champagne & Limousines, Ostrich Sans Rounded Medium, GeosansLight and DIN-LightAlternate.

When viewed from a distance, Ostrich Sans Rounded Medium, is hard to read. The spacing is way too tight and when read with Saturday Sessions it confuses my eyes weirdly, I guess it is the change in kerning. DIN-LightAlternate doesn't work well either. The shape of the letter has more of a serious tone than the theme. Initially I wanted a different font than the one I have messed with, but it turns out in this case it is probably the best! I am going with Champagne & Limousines as the supporting font.

Final type

Here is the final type! This can be made 3D or kept flat. Depending on the illustration/background which Steph comes up with I can alter this so that it works the best. We don't want the type to be fighting with the background but for the whole thing to work together. I now need to find a complimentary typeface to go alongside this which will communicate the details of each event.

Type progress

By editing and moving the nodes in Illustrator for each typeface I have created some different versions. My first attempts are at the bottom working the way up.

My favourite is the third one down and so now I have tried messing about with the sheer tool as this will give it more character and a 3D effect to compliment our concept.

From these I have chosen to take forward the fourth one down. From here I can see how the words can interact with each other, and think more about layout...

I have my favourite! It needs a bit of tweeking to make it fit together nicely and possibly some extra detail in the shape of the end of stems. These finishing touches will make the type look more professional.

Fonts to fuck with

Made a list of what I could do to maker the 'Saturday Sessions work with our theme and concept, and the brand.

IMAGE.

The image in my mind is a sans serif font with additions and subtractions from the detail such as counters, stems etc... Here are my shortlist of possible fonts to use...

From this long list I have narrowed it down a bit more to 3... I will mess about with these and add and subtract the elements which I want to find the one which works the best. I can use another font for the information. These fonts below are Akzidenz-Grotesk BQ Condensed, Champagne & Limousines and MLB Astros.

Typography ideas

Thinking about 2 different font styles for the poster. One more custom lettered for the 'Saturday Sessions' and one more generic and readable for the information on the posters.

After having a chat with Steph we have been able to be clearer about our ideas. We basically want to utilise these two processes. The type to be in this style and the 3d/illustrations to be in this style...

Delivery of paper...

This is a little brighter than I imagined...

I am worried now how the ideas in my head are going to translate to the printed page. The paper is giving me a headache and has put me in a bad mood. I have 10x metres of this stuff... Thinking now that the trend is limited fluorescent colours.

GOOD NEWS/BAD NEWS

This stock is rubbish for ink printing... tried to print black onto it with James and the ink doesn't dry! I tried 2 variations of letters over the orange and a black background and letters in orange to see which is less painful to the eyes! James said you can't so fine detail on this paper as the ink bleeds heavily... and he wasn't wrong!

However, I can print onto this paper in the Mac Suites as they are laser printers, and the detail comes out really nicely! Unfortunately, the black is a bit transparent so it looks best when they type is in black. The letters stand out really well, and with so much detail it distracts from the orange a little bit. Much happier about this stock now!

Hierarchy

Beautiful Meme said that one thing graduates lack is hierarchy in type. I think this is one area that I do take into consideration, but not one which I really think alot about. As there is so much typographic content and information to go onto these posters, I have address hierarchy more indepth.

Pencil logos 1

While me and Steph have been researching for our D&AD competition brief (Brief 04) I have also been working on creating my logos for 'A Type of Show' (Brief 03). From the T's that I did previously, I can make up the other letterforms by hand and then trace them later.

Here are the first few which I have completed when not working on Brief 04.

Evaluation of week 7

Feel like I could have done alot more this week. I have been doing little bits and bobs from each brief, but nothing major. The crit on Thursday went really well and I have a new direction for my briefs. By letting go of some of them I can focus on the 4 major ones and get more out of them than I would have previously been able to do.

This week, I am working extremely hard to start and finish the competition D&AD brief (Brief 04) with Steph Bourne. We have already rewritten the brief and defined a concept for the form of the posters, we need to define roles and also experiment with folds. In the evenings I am working on the 10x logos for Brief 03 and so hopefully by next week I can vectorise these and apply them over my deliverables and complete this one by next Friday, giving me the final week to push my Brief 01 and Brief 05 as far as I can.

Also, I need to print my 20x posters for the pop up shop (Brief 05). As these take a long time and only one machine can print them I will need to keep going down to the print room to check on the progress and send some overnight. It will be a total of 10 hours printing!

Time management

Another change of my time management after the crit on Thursday. In order to complete all the briefs in time I have adjusted my schedule.

One immediate issue I have is printing my posters from Brief 05 for the Pop-Up Shop.
